I nterviewed Howard Shapiro on October 24 2006

Q: What are you employed on now?

At the moment I am marketing my Hanukkah book for the 2nd year

and trying to get my anti-bullying book into schools, foundations etc.

After the first of the year, I am planning to start process my 3rd

book “Hockey Day’s” which I hope to have out in October, 2007.

Q: Tell us about your cardinal books?

My first book was published in October, 2005. It is called “Hanukkah

Counts Also!” and the premise is that thither are a brother (Tomcat) and a

sister (Tupelo) who are each eight years old and they live in a

predominately non-Jewish area and they are bombarded by Christmas images, shows, movies etc. And Tupelo, questions why they have to be different and why Santa can’t bring her a shoetree or presents. She runs upstairs on the first night of Hanukkah but has a heart-to-heart talk with her older cousin and after the talk she comes to realize that Hanukkah is an important holiday and that it matters (and counts) also.

My new book which was released on September 12th, is called “Destructo

Boy & Spillerella…We Are Who We Are!” and it is an anti-bullying

account. It again involves Tomcat and Tupelo, who are being bullied by a big fourth grader. First the bully starts picking on Tomcat and so Tupelo and Tomcat has a chat with his Dad who reminds him that he has capability and courage that he doesn’t even know he has. When the bully starts picking on Tupelo, and Tomcat sees the hurt in her eyes and face, he puts his foot down and tells the bully that his words and actions don’t matter and will not hurt he or Tupelo any more.

Q: Apical five tips for raising kids:

1. Parents have to activity as a group: I believe that this is the absolute number one advise for raising kids. The Parents must be in synchronise with each other and cover each other on household tasks. Especially when the child or children are one to III years old. The household tasks like doing the laundry, the dishes, emptying the disparage, balancing the checkbook and paying the bills can be overwhelming so those tasks must be divided up and the parents have to Activity at being good teammates.

2. Make time for yourself. Whether it’s going to a movie by yourself

or just walking around the mall or going to a athletic event, couples

need to do any block to get them out of the house for a abbreviated amount of time.

3. Agenda at least one date night a month. Piece it helps to

recharge one’s batteries doing something unaccompanied, couple’s should make time once a month to get out and accompany a movie or have dinner or simply get out of the house and be unitedly at least once a month.

4. Be cost and money concious. Everyone wants to make their kids

happy but the $50 or $75 that is exhausted on a holiday gift or outfit that will be tangled in the closet never to reform of day could be better old by being put in the bank or towards a college education fund. When I have money concious I mean that the husband and woman should put off luxury purchases and similar purchases like new furniture, drapes a better car etc. in lieu of action money for the childs education.

5. Keep things “even” between the husband and woman’s families. What

I mean is that if you have to make cardinal Blessing boodle, do it. If

the woman’s mother is observance the kids one night, ask the husband’s

mother to follow them the next time. Keeping both families on an even keel will do wonders for the husband and woman in their relationship and won’t cause any friction with their families. If one broadside is being also agressive or bossy, it is the husband or woman’s obligation to tell them to back off, it’s for the greater good of THEIR marriage/relationship and in the children’s interst to keep things as even as possible between the families.

Q: Where can we find out about your books and site?

I have a site, .howardshapiro.net and my books are both available on Amazon.com. Also, copies can be ordered directly from me and I will autograph each copy. Both books cost $8.95. For more information, please send an email to howard.shapirohotmail.com or go to .howardshapiro.net

Q: Something people must know about you.

Just that I activity really hard at the entire “business” or writing and

marketing my books and that I love feedback from people who have read

them. As Louis Ferdinand Celine said “when you compose, you should put your cutis on the table” and I truly believe this and deprivation my books to make a difference to individual or help them in any artifact, even if it’s just for a moment. That, and I also believe that we are all capable of greatness in all that we do and we should reach for that.

Get Your Hands Dirty! Historical Research For Novelists

For over a decade, piece I was developing my writing skills, I had the great good fortune to activity at a large outdoor ethnic museum near Milwaukee called Old Class Wisconsin. This historic computer includes a crossroads community and ten employed farmsteads, with restoration dates ranging from 1845 finished 1915. Old Class Wisconsin is a place where Interpreters get their hands dirty, so my knowledge of historical domestic and agricultural processes grew exponentially. I learned how to warp a loom, how to milk cows, how to make rennet and lye cleanse. I prepared alcohol, sauerbraten, hops yeast, and Finnish egg coffee. And I’ve passed many of these skills, of course, on to my characters.

But hands-on experience brings much more to a writer’s chest than abstract apprehension. Living history sites and events can provide the circumstantial perception details that bring a environment to life. I know what hog intestines aroma like when they’re being prepared for sausage casing, how flax fibers feel between my fingers as they twine into linen cord, what threshing machines channel like when they rattle to life in the middle of a newly-shorn wheatfield. And because I have a novelist’s vivid imagination, my experiences at the computer provided compelling insight into the lives of people long gone. Standing on a brick kitchen floor until my knees ached, having to fetch draft horses that broke finished fences on a daily basis, deficient to weep when cabbage moths or drought destroyed crops I had carefully nurtured, cutting oats with a sickle so comb with condensation it was hard to grasp&ndashthis kind of experience provided new perspectives of the women who peopled both the restored homes I worked in and the pages of my novels.

The good news is that, to varying degrees, anyone can gain any hands-on perspectives about the people they are writing about. If possible, call a employed historic computer. Obviously this is easier for those writing about, have, the nineteenth-century farm experience than those writing about Biblical days. But even sites only tangentially related to your time and place might provide any functional perception experiences. Ask the interpreters (guides) questions. Call during different seasons. Hang around, accept photographs, jot perception details and impressions in a notebook.

Look, also, for reenactors interested in your period. Ask reenactors questions that go beyond process and facts, and get to the experiences of the people they portray. Ask if you can hold their musket, or attempt your hand at tamping cabbage into sauerkraut, or whatsoever else is going on. Act to help out at the next event. Get involved.

Finally, be creative about finding distance to experience bits of life. Fashion (or order) a coat frockcoat, or a corset and period-appropriate dress. Learn how to tat lace or carve herpes with a drawknife. Grow heirloom vegetables. Ask a farmer to appear you how to pluck chickens. Make a fire pit in the back curtilage, and attempt baking bannocks or cooking resent or frying flatbread.

Get your hands dirty. You, and your readers, will be glad you did.

Creative Writing Ideas - How To Have Them

Are you inactivity and hoping for creative writing ideas? Why not consume any simple techniques to produce as many ideas as you will need? Here are a few to get you started.

Combine Stories For Creative Writing Ideas

Thither is a model called “concept combination” which is to create new products to sell. Consume it to create new stories, and it is unremarkably good for a few laughs and a few ideas as advantageously. All you have to do is imaginatively combine old stories into new ones. For the most creative ideas, consume stories which are dissociated in their theme.

Assume you start with the biblical account of Adam and Eve, and combine it with the movie, “Character Wars.” Perhaps in the new account a man and a Black are placed alone on a new planet, as an experiment to accompany what will happen over the centuries. Would they or their future offspring develop our same ideas about God and morality?

Get crazy if you deprivation. “King Kong,” and “Romeo and Juliette” could become a account about when apes learn to communicate, and the first human-ape romantic relationship develops. The couple is of course rejected by ape and human elite. How about “Frankenstein” and “Gone With The Curve?” Start dreaming up those new creative writing ideas.

More Distance To Have Creative Writing Ideas

Make a list of what is most important to you. Accept anything from that list, and find a account in it. For example, if honesty is important to you, create a account populated with characters that are defined by how honest or dishonest they are, and appear the consequences of this trait. If thither is any political principle that is important to you, imagine new stories which appear what happens when this principle is followed - or when it isn’t.

Make a list of the stories most like. Start with any account you really like, and entertain how you would have told it, or how it could be told. The start writing to accompany if the idea “grabs” you. Romeo and Juliet has been successfully retold a hundred distance in books and movies, low many titles. Why not find a formula you like, which has been proven to activity, and compose your own updated variant?

Follow the evening news and make a list of the stories. This author is mined by receiver shows all the time. Attempt to add a convolute that will get the account read. For example, accept a real life issue that is in the news and approach it from a different perspective. Perhaps it could be a account of a businessman who profiteers after a hurricane, but you find a artifact find a artifact to make him the good guy.

One of the best distance to get ideas is to compose anything right now. The English writer Graham Green attributes his achiever to a simple habit: He forced himself to compose at least 500 words daily, whether he felt like it or not. Creative inspiration can achieve at any time, but it strikes more often when thither is activity instead of inactivity. Just start writing and you’ll have more creative writing ideas.

This might be an awkward approach if you’re aiming at the problem of choosing literature, but frankly, haven’t you also picked the ‘wrong’ book by a random grab at the bookshop or at the library? The book you put away with a breathe after III chapters.

It might have been the perfect choice for individual else. One of my friends reads nothing but books about religious history. I proved one. Tho’ I don’t mind the case, I had a feeling of pedaling a bicycle with a leaking hoop. You know how that is, you deprivation to get as far as possible before the hoop is empty, but you know that if you accelerate, it leaks faster.

The first impression of a book is the cover, so the eye leads us to the next block &ndash the time consuming intellectual process. At the rare occasions when we have the time, we would like to read full chapters from any books at the bookstore. The problem is we would feel like shoplifters if we did. Besides, the book dealer would fear that the book might look old if also many pages have been turned. Not everyone is careful. This is where Internet enters the environment.

Alone with our computer we can drop days reading free chapters. And the people who provide the service are happy if we do. The opportunity to form an opinion gives us a freedom that older generations of book readers could only dream of. And when we eventually have found the book we deprivation to read, we can allay ask our local retailer to order it for us.

Except for being a door opener, Internet is the perfect instrument for digging deeper down into the literature class. Those of us who are in the habit of roaming around the blade with this purpose know that thither are many distance of introducing the stories. One concept is extensive samples including long summaries, free chapters, excerpts and facts. This is what I like best, so &ndash naturally - it’s the artifact my books are introduced. Perusal process involves a lot of written assignments that are unremarkably the deciding points of any course grade. They may be difficult and time-taking but the results you get afterwards are essential both in your academic life and in your future profession regardless the field. Looking over your essay, tutors evaluate your writing skills, your ability to analyze, to assess, to compare and contrast, to express an opinion and to channel persuasive and affirmative. As you can accompany, thither are a lot of important factors that influence the grade the tutor gives to you for your written assignment. Thither are a lot of types of written assignments and as a good educatee you are questionable to know how to compose them all.

One of the hardest essays to complete is a compare and contrast essay. From the first compass it may appear that it is real easy to compare and contrast things but this really depends on what things are you comparing and contrasting. It takes time to compare material objects like buildings or monuments; imagine how time-taking the process of comparison of philosophical currents is. It is real important to choose objects or events that can be put low the same category at least in one feature out of the others. It is impossible to compare orange juice and rocky mountain, isn’t it? But these are simple material matters that can be easily defined. What to do if you are given a number of matters that appear irrelevant in all the characteristics known to you? That means that you have to do a little research and evaluation. After a long illness, my mother passed away in June 2006. Even tho’ we all knew she had little time left, her death allay came as a blow.

My brothers helped me compose the eulogy, and I delivered it. I almost made it finished, maintaining my composure and humor right to the end. But, final goodbyes are never easy. With the last condemn, a poignant and personal message to our mother from my brothers and myself, I lost it. To cry at your mother’s funeral is natural and expected. But being an author, and being comfortable with public address, I cerebration I could manage it. I humbly acknowledge grief trumped self-denial.

And so thither are the relatives and friends, many of which I hadn’t seen in decades. Of course, one must always be polite and gracious when individual offers condolences and a appealing hug. But, what do you do when you haven’t a clue who the devil the person is? Years pass, people change. More than once, I had to discreetly ask a trustworthy relative, “Who is that?” So, I had to hide my aghast expression when I realized time has been kinder to me than to others of my bloodline, or to my old friends.

We got finished it. At the luncheon after the funeral, I said goodbye not just to my mother, but to many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends &ndash any of which I would accompany again and any I know I will not. It is an odd experience, looking in the face of your own mortality. My father died ten years ago. And now my mother is gone. It becomes a reality check, to do what thither is to do piece thither is allay time.

That being the case, I am writing again. I am happily anticipating the release of my 2nd book, Sins and Secrets. And I am thrilled to be an Aphrodisia author. It is a fantastic rush to jump back into the deep end of my life!

My Mother’s Eulogy

Greet everyone and convey you for coming. We are here to remember and have goodbye to our Mother. She fought the good fight, being as tenacious as a pit bull and never giving up. But finally, after more than XXX years of dealing with different conditions and illnesses, she has found peace.

Mother was the kinda mother who never obstructed torment about her children, no matter what age we were. Were we eating advantageously? Were we getting enough kip? Were we staying advantageously and not catching colds or the flu?

She kept after our father in the same artifact, but they were also a couple who enjoyed each other’s company lots. Mom and Dad were best friends as advantageously as husband and woman. They had fun unitedly. They loved to dance unitedly, particularly the polka. They also often took us on joy rides to the local forest, distribution their enjoyment of the forest with us and showing us how to attack deer at hour.

One of those rides wasn’t as much fun. Mom and Dad took us on an unasterisked dirt road, trying to accompany any deer. Dad found himself down in a gully. He proved to reversal, and couldn’t. We were isolated overnight until lumbermen came to activity the next morning and found us. Evidently the road was a logger road, not meant for passenger interchange. As I will explain in a moment, thanks to Mother’s planning, we were OK. It was chilling, but it was kind of fun.

Both my brothers and I were all toilet-trained the same artifact. Mother’s model was to be with us in the bathroom, run the faucet, and softly have, “Rain, rain, rain.” It worked. In fact, the persuasion has lasted the III of us into adulthood. With all the rain we’ve had the last few days, my brothers and I have needed to act inside easy range of a bathroom.

Mother loved music and sang in the choir. She particularly loved country music, which the III of us hated at the time. The Saturday night ritual was always Country Music Jubilee, so Hee Haw, so the Grand Ole Opry on the radio.

She loved gardening, both for glorious beautiful flowers and for food. Address of food, Mother made the best fried chicken. She put the Kentucky Fried Chicken arcanum recipe to disgrace. For holidays and family gatherings, she cooked large amounts of food, and allay apprehensive whether thither was enough for everyone to eat. And piece she was cooking, she would distribution the food, and at mealtime, piece everyone else stuffed themselves, she couldn’t eat much more.

Mother had real artistic ability. One of the times she best displayed it was at Christmas. We always had huge trees and many decorations around the house, but Mother’s crowning achievement was found low the shoetree. She sculptured an elaborate community thither, with mirrors for frozen lakes, pine seedlings, or “crow’s feet” for miniature trees, and boxes and props to create multilevel hills and mountains. She would cover the hills with achromatic sheets and cotton to simulate snow. Her community was like Christmas Wonderland to us. My brother continues this practice in his home.

Mother was the only girl in her family, and she got into hunting just as much as her brothers did. I’m careful a lot of you recall a character Johnny Carson played occasionally on The Tonight Appear. His name was Floyd R. Turbo, American, and he would make confused editorial comments on the issues of the day, but dressed differently from other TV commentators. When Mother was going to go hunting, she would put on a red Woolrich jacket and a hat with ear flaps, the resemblance was pretty amazing. I couldn’t resist calling her Floyd R. Turbo, American. I believe she was fairly amused. Or else I would call her the Great Achromatic Huntress. And she was a booming hunter.

Remember what I told you about Mother being prepared when we were cragfast on the logging road? Our Mother made emergency preparedness an art form. No matter where she went, she packed for any potential disaster. On picnics, we packed boxes full of food, enough for a bantam army, the grill, all the lawn furniture and extra clothes in case one of us fell into the H2O. When she went to my brother’s college graduation, she took the supporter and the coffee pot to the motel. And when she cosmopolitan anywhere away from home, we had to lock down the kitchen sink so she wouldn’t accept it.

Finished it all, Mother was motivated by her desire to do the best she could for us. Every night she would send us to kip by expression, “Good night, sweet dreams, I love you.” For the rest of her life, she would continue to send us off with those words. So it is only fitting that now we are able to have the same to send her off.

So, Mother, good night, sweet dreams, we love you.

THE SITUATION

You had an interview with a Content Expert (SME, individual who has the information that you need) for your product. He/she told you all that you needed to know. However, by the time you got to compose the material into the Person Document, you have forgotten much of what was discussed. Your notes only help a bit. This loss or garbling the information from the SME that you need for your writing is the “Interview-Writing Disconnect.”

SOLUTION

The solution is divided into III components: Preparation Before the Interview, Actions During, and Following the Interview.

Advise: If possible, agenda the interview as close to the time that you are going to compose that part of the Person Document. The longer you act between the interview and the writing, the more difficult it will be to recall the content.

Before the Interview

* Your guiding principle is to Be Prepared. You should have read what you can about the product, its environment, who will consume it, and what they (unremarkably) deprivation to do with the product.

Know as much as you can before the interview. The more you know about the product, the better off you will be in the interview.

* Choose the goals of the interview. Apportion this information with the SME. Do this in an e-mail before the interview.

* Ask the SME if you can (audio; recording is also obtrusive) record the interview. Get a recorder (preferably a digital recorder) and make careful it is fix to function properly during the interview.

* Gather any other materials you will need for the interview.

* Fix your recorder, etc quickly when the meeting begins.

* (You might deprivation to practice action legible notes…I careful need to)

THE HARDEST PART

Leave your ego at the door. (This is really hard.) Don’t make signs that indicate that you believe something that you do not. Ask questions, get the explanation that you need. Here is something to tell the SME:

“If I ask what sounds like a anserine question, bear in mind that I am acting based on the knowledge that our Person has.”

DURING THE INTERVIEW

Record the interview (if permitted).

Start with any overview questions, much as:

* What is this portion of the product (issue) called?

* How does this issue fit in to the product?

* What is this (portion of the product) old for?

* When would individual consume this (unless it is “obvious”)?

* What has to be fix before the Person can consume this part of the product?

* Any other conditions about when this would be old, or when it would be avoided?

After you have the background information, so move on to the actual operation of the part of the product. Ask any questions that you have prepared and any others that come up in the interview.

Remember, if you do not believe something, ask.

Ask any unofficial questions. Review the stairs that you took, expression them out loud in your own words (especially if you are recording the conference). Have the SME correct any mistakes that you make.

Ask if thither is any related information to this issue. Are thither any tips or traps exploitation this part of the product?

MORE ABOUT RECORDING INFORMATION

If the SME points to a part of the product (much as a pane in a piece of code, or the control panel of a barbecue) so have out loud what the SME is pointing to. Have something like “we are looking at the main address book pane” or “we are looking at the main burner control.” This will enable you to link what is happening in the interview with the audio enter.

If the SME performs an operation, have what it is. “You just entered the new person’s name, and the ‘New Card’ pane appeared.” Or “You just turned the burner control to the ‘Light’ position, and now the igniter is clicking, and thither’s the flame.”

Accept notes as advantageously as you can. But do not let any of your activity get in the artifact of the interview. It’s not a good idea to keep fastener the SME piece you catch up with your note action. You will have the audio recording to fall back on.

The SME might provide handouts for the interview. If you are allowed to, accept notes on the handouts. The goal is to link your audio recording and notes and handouts unitedly. For example, if the SME provides a check print for a code product, you should link your notes, audio recording and the handout unitedly by reading the appellation of the handout aloud. Do it as unobtrusively as possible.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW

As presently as possible after the interview, you must go over your notes and handouts. If possible, this should be done inside minutes of the end of the interview. Find a quiet place (perhaps you have access to the interview room after the interview) and go over your notes.

Review your notes and add clarification to them. When you add the material to the notes do it with enough detail so that individual who was not at the meeting will be able to believe it. That person is you in even a day or cardinal!

As presently as you can get thereto, accept the expanded notes and compose them into a draft of that part of the Person Document. That should be inside a day or cardinal of the interview, if possible. Every minute’s delay adds to the disconnect between what you learned in the meeting and what you compose.

Let your draft guard for a day or so, so review and revise it for clarity and completeness. Consider sending the reviewed and revised variant of the draft to the SME for comments. (You only deprivation comments on the material, not on grammar.)

Agenda time for this writing, even if you are juggling various writing projects. The time you economise in not having to recall the information at a later date will be a good investment.

THE BOTTOM LINE

You can avoid or reduce the effects of the Interview-Writing Disconnect by being prepared before the interview, asking questions and action effective notes during the interview, and reviewing and writing the material as presently after the interview as possible.
