Freda Brooks Phillips Douglas had an autobiographical-history book “Cherish the Past” published in 2002, has her 2nd book of fiction “Winds of Change” ready for the printer and has her 3rd book on the front burner. This is the predicament, Harry Jenkins, protagonist/lawyer of The Osgoode Trilogy finds himself in, at the beginning of the first novel, Conduct in Question. Harry longs for freedom and love, but has been treed low his adult partner’s finger and in a dead marriage for years. He’s always been certain of his own moral convictions, but when his partner drops dead in the office, Harry is free to make his own mistakes.
He and his woman Laura often argue about money.

“Law practice is more than just making money,” Harry had insisted.
“Of course!” she said in tiredly impatient tones. “But it certainly doesn’t hurt to set the right duration on your services.”

Yet, thither was a yearning, a meaning that the time for making real money was passing. But it wasn’t just the money. A dull emptiness nagged at his character.
And so, he is ripe for the picking! Almost immediately, he is sweptback into a massive money-laundering connive by the enigmatic Mr. Chin &ndash land developer &ndash thereby putting him in direct conflict with his oldest and wealthiest client, Marjorie Deighton. With Albert Chin’s huge retainer check for activity to be done, Harry senses something is amiss. When he deposits the check in the bank, the manager demands he make a payment on his deceased partner’s real considerable and overdue bank loan. Otherwise, he will freeze the Chin money. 4. Describe their Current Behavior: Accept the essences and the circumstantial examples you have now created and determine what kind of behavior your characters might exhibit as a result. Don’t limit yourself with these, but rather excite yourself with the possibilities.
Simple examples from our leading lady - a Black who: hides her body; avoids friends from her past; mistrusts anyone who comments favorably on her appearance; desires to control her education and her intellect; avoids alcohol.
5. Raise the bet: Emotions are extreme. Play in the realm of this extreme when dealing with the fears and ambitions of your characters. These essences are all encompassing; meaning that we drop our lifetimes with them. Don’t cheat your characters by being afraid to raise the bet as high as you can. Needing to find a precious endocarp to sell to an art dealer by midnight to raise the financing to economise your character’s mother’s house before the bank takes it away from her tomorrow is exciting! Look back at your own life and remember how seriously you accept your essences &ndash when your essences are threatened will you fight to extremes to defend them, just as when they are fulfilled, do you enjoy any of your greatest moments in life? Play in the realm of the extreme. Raise the bet. Your essences are life and death to you &ndash let them be that artifact to your characters.
6. Most people in the writing class talk about the III levels of rejection–form, personal, rewrite–but I’ve discovered VII types (after over 200 rejections before being published and about hundred after, I should know). Learning how to analyze rejection is a helpful ability for any writer because you’ll learn what to ignore, what to consider, and what will put you on the right belt or, as the case may be, off of it.
Here are the VII types of rejections that may find their artifact in your email or mailbox:
1) No response. The agent or editor doesn’t send you anything. I find these ones most annoying. You act in anticipation, hoping, praying for something either in the mail or online. Nothing. Cardinal months past. Allay nothing.
2) Form rejection. These are the ones that start Dear…fill in the name. They tell you that your activity isn’t right for them and care you better luck elsewhere. Thither’s no feedback. You should flip these rejections immediately. But be warned, form rejections are easy to get if you don’t follow directions: submitting to the wrong magazine or publisher, a wrong issue, wrong manuscript format, or writing in crayon or invisible ink. To avoid form rejections, contemplate the magazine or publisher’s criteria for submissions to make careful you’re giving them something they’ll deprivation (i.e. a clean manuscript that addresses the needs of their readers) and not a missive of “Why I Should be Published by You.”
3) Multiple choice. When an agent or editor takes the time to put “Not bad” on the corner of your query accept it as the clue of encouragement that it is. Ignore the nasty ones. But even if they don’t tell you why your activity is being rejected, you’re heading in the right direction. Getting a good or bad personal note indicates your communication. It is my experience that it’s better to get any kind of response rather than just a form rejection. Why? Because that’s how readers will be. Any will hate your activity. Any will love it. Receiving a response, especially a personal note, lets you know that you’re hitting buttons and that’s a good abstraction.
5) The critique. Most aspiring authors expect this identify of rejection, but editors and agents don’t owe you this. They get hundreds of queries and manuscripts a week and they can’t critique all of them. If you do receive one consider yourself fortunate that individual has appropriated the time to tell you why they’re rejecting your activity. They may be wrong, but at least you know why. Remember, they are action a risk by sending you bad news. The form rejection is popular because many editors and agents have suffered the anger of rejected authors who will bombard their offices with letters arguing why they believe they critique was wrong. Don’t be one of those authors. Accept what you can from the critique so move on.
